Extended period of hot weather conditions can pose serious risks to our health. In fact, there are on average 2000 heat related deaths every year in England according to the NHS.
As temperatures continue to rise this summer, make sure the hot weather does not harm you, the people you care for or anyone you know.
–Dehydration or when your body loses more fluids than you take in
–Heat exhaustion – fatigue resulting from extended exposure to excessive heat
–Heatstroke – if you or anyone else shows symptoms, call 999 immediately
A heatwave can affect anyone but older adults, especially those over 75 who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated, are most at risk.
When caring for older adults, whether you are a care worker, family member or friend, keeping them safe will always be the top priority. So, here are 5 useful summer safety advice to help them stay comfortable, cool, and hydrated during hot weather conditions.
–Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and avoid alcohol and caffeine. To help the people you care for, make sure they drink during mealtimes, or offer them food with a high-water content. Do not wait until they feel thirsty!
–Eat a balanced diet – Prepare light, cold and nutritious meals e.g., fruits, pasta salad
–Keep indoor spaces cool – Close curtains on rooms that face the sun
–Protect your skin – Apply sunscreen of at least SPF 30, and try to keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm
–Take a cool shower or bath and wear loose, lightweight clothing or breathable fabrics like cotton
