Hot Weather Driving for All

19 July | By

A Red Extreme Heat warning is in place for parts of England for Monday and Tuesday! Here are some tips to help you drive safely and comfortably during hot weather.

Keeping the vehicle interior cool

  • Park in shade or where the vehicle will be in shade when you need to use it.
  • If safe to do so, keep the windows slightly open to let the heat out.
  • Use a sun screen in the windows to reflect out sunlight.
  • Take extra time to cool the vehicle before setting off.
  • Open windows or use air conditioning (not at the same time).
  • Where possible, drive at cooler times of the day.

Keeping you cool and alert

  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
  • Avoid fizzy and caffeinated drinks.
  • Wear light and loose clothing.
  • Keep out of the sun to stop your core temperature overheating.
  • Keep the vehicle ventilated to reduce drowsiness.
  • Do not eat big meals and drive. Digesting big meals diverts blood from the brain and adds to the drowsiness.
  • Where possible, avoid driving at the hottest part of the day.

Keeping the vehicle on the road and running

  • Wear sunglasses & ensure windscreen wash is kept topped up to keep windscreens clear of smear/ glare.
  • If glare/dazzle is too much, slow down or pull over.
  • Check tyre tread and pressure. Higher air/road temperature changes the tyre pressures and therefore balance and handling of your vehicle.
  • Road surfaces soften when hot. Take care when braking and cornering as the tar may not hold the vehicle as firmly on the road.
  • If stationary for a while, switch the engine off to prevent the vehicle overheating. Open windows to keep you cool. Running the air con off the battery may flatten it.
  • Make sure radiators are topped up. Spare fluid in the vehicle is advisable.
  • If your vehicle begins to overheat, pull over as soon as possible. Open the bonnet to let out heat; after around 30 minutes slowly open the radiator cap to release the pressure. Use something to protect you hand from the heat and top up any lost fluids.
